How to Incorporate Biophilic Design Into Your Home Remodel

Residential Remodeling

In the world of home remodeling and interior design, one particular style has become popular in the last few years: biophilic design. The biophilic approach seeks to connect people to the natural world in their indoor environments. In the workplace, biophilic design can enhance productivity. At home, biophilic design is comforting and reassuring, contributing to a sense of mindfulness and calm.

There are many ways to bring the natural world into your home without sacrificing modern amenities or conveniences. Everything from material choices to lighting styles can create a connection with the outdoors. Working with an experienced Connecticut contractor is important. A good contractor will have ideas from previous projects and can provide input on material choice and design options. Working with the experts can make your Connecticut remodel a success.

Focus on Natural Lighting

Bring daylight into your home by adding larger windows and skylights. Choose windows with fewer muntins to create an unbroken view of the outdoors. Don't forget that you don't have to replace windows with the same style when installing new ones. You can change double-hung windows for casements, or a picture window for a bay window. Visit a window showroom in your area to find the best window styles for your Connecticut home.

Allow more light in your home by replacing heavy drapes with light-diffusing window treatments such as sheers or cotton curtains. Whenever possible, choose operable windows that open easily to allow fresh air indoors. Install glass doors (such as sliding glass patio doors) to blend indoor spaces with the outdoors just beyond your walls.

When the remodel is over, avoid blocking windows with heavy furniture. Consider rearranging furnishings or purchasing furnishings that will not block your view. Your contractor can install custom cabinetry or furnishings that will provide a place for storage or comfortable lounging - without disturbing the view outside your windows.

When installing electric lights in your home, use fixtures that emit a warm glow like the light from the sun, or look for warm-colored light bulbs to accomplish the same goal. Place lights near mirrors that will bounce light around the room and make your home's interior brighter overall.

Choose Organic Finishes and Materials

Organic finishes and materials can call to mind the natural environment where the materials were found. A simple example is the installation of natural wood flooring, which spreads warmth and beauty throughout your home. Wood flooring pairs well with exposed beams or a wood-paneled ceiling.

Stone countertops are another natural material that adds value to your home while also deepening your home's connection with the outdoors. Stone can be installed in many parts of the home, not just countertops. Consider stone for tiled surfaces like floors, walls, fireplaces, and staircases.

When choosing colors and finishes for your home, consider matte and earthy finishes over high-gloss. Low-shine materials are common in the natural world and contribute to a sense of peace in your home.

Choosing a color palette? Earthy reds, sandy tones, and soft blues all complement biophilic design well, as do gentle shades of sage green. There are many color palette generators online to choose from. Consider inputting one of your favorite photos of the natural world into the color palette generator to choose a nature-inspired palette.

Incorporate Natural Shapes and Patterns

Hard, straight lines are common in homes, but you can make your house more reminiscent of the natural world by incorporating curves and organic shapes. Look for curved furniture with water-like waves that give your rooms a softer look.

Natural patterns are also important in biophilic design. Incorporate patterns made from rattan, clay, and linen to enhance the natural appearance of your home. Avoid rigid shapes.

Will you install wallpaper in your home? Consider a wallpaper with natural textures and colors to reinforce the appearance of nature.

Choose Decor to Match

Your home's decor may change after your remodel. If you're choosing new furnishings or new art, consider decor that willmatch the biophilic design throughout your home. Look for pieces of artwork that reflect nature or decorate your walls with nature photography.

Select furnishings that are curvy, comfortable, and match the color scheme you've selected for the space.

Consider Installing a Living Wall

A living wall, also called a greenery wall, is a wall that holds living plants. A greenery wall is the perfect way to tie together your home's biophilic design. Have your greenery wall installed by a contractor. Plants can create moisture problems that can damage building materials, so working with your contractor to install the structure for a living wall can help ensure that a greenery wall will bring value to your home while avoiding the potential problems.

Start Your Remodel With an Experienced Connecticut Contractor

Your home's structure and design, as well as its decor, all contribute to biophilic design. Start your remodel with an expert who has helped other homeowners complete similar projects. When interviewing contractors, ask them about their experience with biophilic design. They should be able to show you pictures of recent work and discuss potential design options for your home.
