It's a new year and time to paint new colors in your home! Adding a fresh coat of paint can make your interior and exterior spaces appear well-maintained and newly redone. Whether you're painting one room or your entire house, it's important to choose colors that will create an ambiance where you can feel comfortable.

How to Choose a Professional Home Remodeling Contractor

Popular Colors in Connecticut Homes

Gray has been an incredibly popular color in Connecticut homes for many years. This, combined with white in Connecticut kitchens, has created a largely neutral color palette that is crisp, clean, and tasteful.

Today, those trends are changing.

More color variety: All-white kitchens are not as popular as they were a few years ago. Connecticut homeowners are turning to earthy hues like blue, green, and brown to add character and beauty to their kitchen spaces. While white can still be found on kitchen counter tops and walls, pops of color on the cabinets and floors give Connecticut kitchens warmth and character.

In other rooms of the house, warm colors like brown and cream, combined with various shades of green, blue, and purple, can be found gracing walls, floors, and furnishings.

Medium paint tones: Connecticut homeowners are attracted to colors that are neither too light nor too dark. Medium tones create a sense of coziness in residential spaces.

Want to create an environment that is both inviting and visually striking? Some homeowners do this by painting their ceilings a color other than white. Painting the ceiling the same color as the walls creates a feeling of continuity throughout your living space. Try painting your home's millwork (such as crown molding and wainscoting) with analogous colors to create a sense of peace and calm.

Medium paint tones work well in large and medium-sized spaces. For smaller rooms and rooms with a northern or eastern exposure, lighter colors can create a sense of space.

Warm tones combined with gray: Make no mistake: grays are still popular in Connecticut homes. Some might say that grays have not gone away, they're simply being used differently in the home. It's common now to see warm grays combined with warmer neutrals like cream, beige, mocha, and cocoa, as well as other colors like deep reds, rustic greens, and tasteful blues.

Paint Colors of the Year

  • Mocha Mousse by Pantone: Mocha Mousse is a warm chocolate color that "captures a mood of comfort and harmony." It is reminiscent of delightful desserts and life's subtle pleasures, like cocoa and coffee.
  • Rumors by BehrThis deep, ruby red is part purple, part brown, all elegance. Rumors combines well with colors like charcoal, khaki, and cream.
  • Quietude by Sherwin WilliamsDescribed as a neutral green with blue-gray undertones, Quietude is a fantastic color for intimate spaces like the bedroom or home office.
  • Encore by ValsparEncore is a deep, meditative blue that combines well with colors like cotton white and cool gray. Encore is a soothing color that can be painted on an accent wall or throughout a large space like a living room or dining room. If Encore is the dominant color in the room, lighten the space with soft whites and creams to prevent the darker color from becoming overbearing.
  • Violet by Minwax: Do you love purple? Violet by Minwax may be the perfect shade for you when staining your next piece of furniture. This shade of gentle purple is both dreamy and bold, perfect for a dining room, bedroom, or living area.
  • Purple Basil by Glidden: A little purple and a little brown makes up the shade Purple Basil. It's a sophisticated shade for your home's walls, millwork, or accent areas.

While each paint company has created its own unique shade for the year 2025, you may notice that there's a pattern in these colors. Each one is rich, earthy, and mellow. The 2025 paint colors of the year are overwhelmingly comforting and calming, creating a sense of peace and calm in Connecticut living spaces.

Tips to Choose Your Color Palette

Choosing a color palette for your home is tough. We've got tips to help.

  • Paint several samples on your walls. Swatches at the paint store often don't provide enough information for you to make a final decision. Don't choose a color without painting a sample on your walls first.
  • Consider online color palette generators. There are a variety of online color palette generators that you can use to choose a paint palette for your home. Color Designer, Coolers.co, and Canva are all examples of websites with color palette generators - explore each to choose the one you like best.
  • Use an online color visualizer for your rooms. Online color visualizers show you what your home would look like if you painted your room in the color of your choice. Color visualizers are often found on paint company websites. You can find one example of these color visualizers on the Behr website, but other paint companies have similar tools.
  • Work with a professional. Work with a design professional to help you choose a color palette for your home. Depending on your project, you might work with a design build contractor or an interior designer.
