"Although hurricanes in Connecticut are a rare event, they do happen. Usually, storms that are hurricanes at their peak are downgraded to tropical storm status when they make landfall over the Connecticut shore, but when they do touchdown in the Nutmeg state, their effects can be devastating.

For example, take these recent storms:

•   Hurricane Irene - a 2011 storm that was responsible for trapping Connecticut residents in their homes, damaging 2,000 utility poles, cutting power to 750,000 residences and businesses and causing structural damage to houses from East Haven to Fairfield, according to NBC Connecticut.
•   Super Storm Sandy - a 2013 storm responsible for damages to Connecticut homes and businesses exceeding more than $360 million dollars, according to the Huffington Post.

Heavy flooding, high winds, lightning, hail and falling trees can cause damage in a range of ways. Roofing, windows, carpentry, flooring and siding are all vulnerable to the effects of hurricanes. Homes and businesses may even sustain hidden damages that do not surface for months, including moisture problems that can result in mold and rot..."
